5th ocean plastics research seminar in Environmental and Food Unit was held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
Aim of this research seminar is to exchange information on marine plastic research, organized by the Marine Science Group of the Environment and Food Unit.
At this seminar, Professor Atsuhiko Isobe (Marine Science Group in Environment and Food Unit, Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University) gave a lecture entitled “Observation and transport model of fine microplastics floating in the deep sea.” , he introduced AOMI, a global observational database of ocean plastics, and discussed the current status of global transport of ocean plastics from the surface to the deep ocean, and knowledge about its dynamic mechanisms. There were many unanswered questions for ocean plastic distribution which are needed for further research. Furthermore, we discussed about plastics in lakes and land.
Next session, Professor Hidemichi Fujii of the Graduate School of Economics, Kyushu University (Environmental and Economic Policy Group in Environment and Food Unit,) presented recent research topics entitled by ”Sustainability activities and the necessity of information disclosure under environmental constraints.” Regarding environmental issues, an approach from an economic perspective is currently essential. in this seminar, Professor Fujii introduced the status of international information disclosure obligations regarding environmental issues and sustainability initiatives in corporate activities. It was significant to introduce the value standards based on money as an index for the problem of marine plastics. It is meaningful to discuss among researchers in various academic fields.
Thank you to everyone who participated.
The next one is scheduled for August.
