Unveiling the “Progression Pathways” of Economic Growth and Decarbonization Across 56 Countries and Regions

The group led by Professor Shigemi Kagawa (Faculty of Economics), Sub-Leader of the Environmental & Food Unit, has published a paper examining the relationship between economic growth and decarbonization.

The study provides a long-term analysis of the relationship between economic growth and carbon footprints across 56 countries and regions worldwide. It reveals that even among countries that have achieved similar levels of economic growth, some have successfully reduced or contained their carbon footprints, while others have continued to increase them.

Furthermore, the study demonstrates that restructuring global supply chains and transforming consumption patterns are essential to achieving both economic growth and decarbonization, offering a new perspective on climate change policy.
