On Thursday, December 12, 2024, the Environment and Food Unit held a workshop entitled “Research for climate change in Kyushu University and Beyond”
This workshop was held to form a network of Kyushu University researchers working on climate change-related research in a wide range of fields and to explore the possibility of interdisciplinary research. The event was a great success, with 35 people registering at the local venue and 62 people registering online.
The event began with an opening remarks from Professor Toshihiko Takemura (Leader of the Atmospheric Science Research Group, Environment and Food Unit), followed by research introductions by nine researchers from our university. From content on the atmospheric mechanism that is the “cause” of climate change, to the “effects” brought about by climate change such as disasters, health, medical care, and agricultural conditions, and the CO2 capture and renewable energy technologies necessary as “countermeasures” to climate change. We were able to hear talks from a wide range of fields and perspectives, including content on “evaluation” from economic and sociological perspectives related to climate change.
In the panel discussion that followed, moderated by Associate Professor Yuriko Hayabuchi (Faculty of Design), Professors Takemura, Professor Akahoshi, Professor Fujikawa, and Managi talked about the role of research at universities and future visions for solving problems. A heated discussion was held between professors and other speakers.
In the future, I would like to plan and hold workshops that integrate different fields, taking into account not only climate change but also various social issues. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who participated in this workshop.
