A research group led by Professor Shigemi Kagawa of the Faculty of Economics, Deputy Leader of the Environment and Food Unit, has analyzed the efficiency with which inputs such as fuel, labor, fishing vessel size, and the number of operating days are utilized in Japan’s coastal fisheries. The study revealed that inefficiency in fuel use was the most significant factor, highlighting the importance of improving fuel efficiency for enhancing the sustainability of coastal fisheries.
The researchers also found that the factors contributing to inefficiency vary by region and type of fishery, suggesting the need for fisheries policies tailored to the characteristics of each region rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
