Since Saturday, August 1, 2026, the exhibition “The Origins and Impacts of Marine Plastic: A Global Challenge through Integrated Knowledge” has been on display at the Fujii Gallery, Kyushu University Ito Campus.
Marine plastic pollution may feel like a distant issue, but in fact, much of it does not come from far away. Plastic used in our everyday lives flows into the sea via roads and rivers, eventually breaking down into microplastics—making this a problem rooted much closer to home than we might think.
Drawing on recent research findings, this exhibition clearly explains the process by which marine microplastics are generated, and features actual specimens, beach-washed debris, and simulations projecting future dispersal patterns.
The first two days of the exhibition coincided with Kyushu University’s Open Campus, drawing many high school visitors. To date, the exhibition has welcomed over 1,300 visitors and has received very positive feedback.
