Report of the 3rd research in Think Tank Unit

The third research in Think Tank Unit was held on Friday, April 19, 2024 at the Ohashi Campus (also online).

In solving problems, the Think Tank Unit adds knowledge from the field of design to the diverse fields of natural science and humanities and social sciences, designs the ideal future society, and proposes solutions to various social issues and process designs. We aim to do this.

At this third research, we invited Yoji Minakuchi, Chief Design Officer at Suntory Holdings Limited, to give a lecture on “Future Society and Art Direction.”

After introducing various examples from the major beverage manufacturer, he said,

“It’s new because it’s seemingly irrational. If you’re trapped in rationality alone, you can’t create the next future.”

In the discussion, which was also joined by Professor Eizo Okada (Design Director of the Think Tank Unit) and Professor Akira Omoto (Leader of the Think Tank Unit), the topic of how to deal with global environmental issues and the role and potential of universities were discussed. Mr. Minakuchi said, “ If minority opinions and intuitive sensations that cannot be put into words are being excluded, humans may be moving away from affluence. When thinking about major challenges such as the SDGs and decarbonization, it might be better to have someone like a philosopher on the team. I want students to develop the ability to see things from multiple perspectives and their own axis at university.”

Thank you to everyone who participated.
